PROTECTING YOUR PRIVACY

You are completely entitled to keep information about your child’s unique needs private. Schools and teachers are well aware that maintaining your child’s confidentiality is one of their most important professional obligations, and unless staff have your specific permission, they should not share information about your child with any unauthorised person.

Having said that, some families prefer to take a proactive approach to sharing information about their child’s unique needs with classmates and their families. For example, the parents of children who have diagnosed disabilities, hearing problems, sight impairments or mobility issues sometimes choose to work with teachers, special educators and other professionals to build specific social and educational inclusion opportunities for their children. You might decide that disclosing details of your child’s challenges in a positive and sensitive way is preferable to a ‘wait and see’ approach, and if this is the case, there are a few things that you can do to help this process to happen.

Government or systemic schools often have access to the support of specialist staff who consult to schools in the region to resource students with unique needs, their families and teachers. If your child will be attending one of these kinds of schools next year, these experienced teachers may have wisdom to share about how to effectively communicate your child’s needs to the rest of the community.

Similarly, if your child has a specific disability that you would like their teachers and peers to understand better, your child’s new school may also be open to utilising external organisations that specialise in delivering professional development programs for teachers and peer education activities for groups of students. Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) and Down Syndrome Australia are just two of the many services that support school-aged children in this way, so if you are keen to explore this option, some time spent researching what is on offer might be helpful before school begins so that you can talk with teachers when the time is right.
